Life insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum, or in some cases a regular income, to your family if you die while the policy is in force. For most families, it's the first piece of protection to put in place: the thing that clears a mortgage, replaces lost income, or simply buys time and breathing room at the worst possible moment.

How it works

You choose a level of cover and a term, often matched to your mortgage or the number of years until your children are financially independent. Premiums are usually fixed for the life of the policy, and if you die within the term, your beneficiaries receive the payout.

Types of cover

  • Level term: a fixed payout throughout the policy, useful for interest-only mortgages or general family protection.
  • Decreasing term: the payout reduces over time, often used alongside a repayment mortgage.
  • Increasing term: cover rises to help keep pace with inflation.

Who it's for

Anyone with financial dependants: a partner, children, or anyone who relies on your income or your presence in the household.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need life insurance?

If you have a partner, children, or a mortgage, life insurance is one of the simplest ways to stop money worries landing on their shoulders if the worst happens.

How much cover should I take out?

A good starting point is enough to clear your mortgage and other debts, plus enough to replace your income for as long as your family would need it. I'll work through the numbers with you rather than leave you guessing.

When does it pay out?

Life insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum on death, and most policies also pay out if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness during the term.

Can I change my cover later?

Yes. Most providers let you adjust your cover as your circumstances change, though increasing it may mean going through underwriting again.
