Income protection insurance pays you a regular, tax-free income if you're unable to work because of illness or injury, for anything from a few months to right up until retirement, depending on the policy you choose. Unlike critical illness cover, it isn't limited to a fixed list of conditions.

How it works

After a chosen waiting period (matched to any sick pay you'd get from an employer), the policy pays a monthly income (typically 50-65% of your usual earnings) for as long as you're unable to work, up to the end of the policy term.

Why it matters

Statistically, you're far more likely to be off work through illness or injury at some point in your career than to die during it. Income protection is often the most overlooked, and most valuable, form of protection.

Who it's for

Employees and self-employed people alike, particularly anyone without generous employer sick pay, or who is self-employed and has no safety net at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need income protection?

If your monthly bills, mortgage, or lifestyle depend on your salary, then yes, it's one of the most valuable policies you can have. It means illness or injury doesn't automatically become a financial crisis on top of everything else.

Who can actually get cover?

Employees, self-employed people, contractors, business owners, and those in higher-risk occupations can all typically be covered, though the terms and pricing vary depending on your work and health.

How long does it pay out for?

Depending on the policy you choose, payments can continue until you're able to return to work, you retire, or you reach the end of the agreed benefit term.

What exactly does it cover?

A regular monthly income if you're unable to work due to sickness or an accident, helping you keep up with everyday costs while you focus on recovering rather than money worries.
