Business protection and tax

One of the most overlooked parts of business protection is how much more tax-efficient it can be than paying for cover personally. A few of the questions I get asked most often:

Do you have a business and pay for life insurance personally?

If so, you're likely paying those premiums out of income that's already been taxed, which is one of the least tax-efficient ways to fund cover. In many cases, routing it through the business instead, typically via a Relevant Life Plan, means the premiums are paid before tax rather than after it.

How does it work?

The business takes out and pays for the policy on your behalf. Premiums usually qualify for corporation tax relief as a business expense, and because it's a Relevant Life Plan, there's normally no employer National Insurance, no P11D benefit, and no income tax or National Insurance for you personally. The payout is written in trust, so it's typically outside your estate for inheritance tax too.

Is this different from Key Person or Shareholder Protection?

Yes. A Relevant Life Plan is personal life cover for you or an employee, funded tax-efficiently through the business. Key Person and Shareholder Protection instead protect the business itself, against the financial impact of losing a key individual or an owner's share changing hands.

Is my business eligible?

Most limited companies can set this up for directors and employees. It's worth a quick conversation to check your specific structure and circumstances before assuming either way.
